Labour Force Survey Highlights - May 2025 (06/06/2025)
The seasonally unadjusted employment rate in the Northwest Territories (NWT) was 65.0% in May 2025, a decline from 67.2% the previous month. Employment fell to 22,700, with 89.0% of persons working full-time while 11.0% worked part-time.

Market Basket Measure - 2023 (05/27/2025)
Statistics Canada has released 2023 poverty estimates for Yukon, Northwest Territories (NWT) and Nunavut using the Northern Market Basket Measure (MBM-N). Estimates for 2023 indicate 17.0% of the NWT population, or approximately 7,200 people, were in poverty. Due to variability of survey data, this estimate could be anywhere between 11.3% (lower bound) and 22.7% (upper bound).

Consumer Price Index - April 2025 (05/20/2025)
Information released today by Statistics Canada indicates the Yellowknife All-Items Consumer Price Index in April rose by 2.7% compared to one year ago. By comparison, annual prices increased by 1.7% for Canada, 1.5% for Edmonton, 3.6% for Whitehorse, and 1.0% for Iqaluit.

Gross Domestic Product, Northwest Territories - 2024 Initial (05/01/2025)
Statistics Canada has released initial 2024 industry level estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the provinces and territories. In 2024, the Northwest Territories GDP fell by 1.1%. GDP declined in the mining, oil and gas extraction industry as oil & gas extraction and diamond mining fell by 3.9% and 11.6% respectively. In contrast, most services-sector industries increased between 2023 and 2024.

2024 Community Survey - Housing Characteristics and Dwelling Satisfaction (04/11/2025)
The Northwest Territories (NWT) Bureau of Statistics is releasing additional data products from the 2024 NWT Community Survey. This release focuses on housing characteristics and dwelling satisfaction. In 2024, one-person (27%) and two-person households (29%) accounted for more than half of the 15,356 households in the NWT. Home ownership increased to 57% while 81% of households were satisfied or very satisfied with their dwelling.

2024 Community Survey - Housing Problems and Core Need (03/20/2025)
The Northwest Territories (NWT) Bureau of Statistics is releasing the first set of data products from the 2024 NWT Community Survey. Every five years, the NWT Bureau of Statistics collects community level information on various indicators including housing conditions, education, labour market, and community involvement. This release focuses on housing problems and core need. In 2024, 3,529 (23.0%) of the 15,356 dwellings in the NWT were in core need. Adequacy was the most prevalent housing problem in the territory with 18.2% of households needing major repairs.

Northwest Territories Population - January 2025 (03/19/2025)
On January 1, 2025 Statistics Canada estimated that 45,074 people were living in the Northwest Territories. Between January 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025, the population in the Northwest Territories increased by 575 persons (+1.3%).

Capital Expenditure Investments - 2025 Intentions (02/26/2025)
Statistics Canada has released 2025 investment intentions for private and public capital expenditures for Canada, the provinces and territories. Compared to 2024, overall 2025 capital expenditures for the Northwest Territories are expected to increase by 1.7% to $1,025.5 million. Public expenditures are expected to increase by 3.5% in 2025, while private expenditures are expected to decrease by 4.1%.
